Wow, I cannot understand all the negs here... I mean, this is one of the SIMPLEST pieces of electronics anyone could every buy besides a flashlight. You buy, you wait for shipment, you receive, you open, you plug it into your computer and follow step by step directions to activate... few minutes later it is done, I unplugged, then plugged into my wall near my router and into my router with the included network cable, plugged in my landline, and seconds later, dialtone... made some calls, everyone thought I was still on my old landline (which I of course canceled a while go now), and when I mentioned it was magicJack, they said now I say that, they might say the quality is like 90-95% of the landline, but definitely as good or better than the cell. I just went to my online account to fool around a bit to see what's there (not really even necessary) and some nice features, but not sure really why I would waste my time there. I had absolutely ZERO reason to call customer service, or chat or whatever, so I cannot vouch or ream them like the other here, but maybe these people are just unlucky or whatever... but as u can see, not much can go wrong with this type of simple product. Think about it, if it works SO perfectly for so many (despite the bad reviewers), then it isnt the device's fault, the device WORKS, LOL... it is 99% the user's PC, internet connection, whatever... as my IT guru friend called it, it must be a PBKAC error. Have u guys ever seen the true satisfaction ratings of Microsoft Windows? Enuff said....

Let me demonstrate a typical MagicJack phone call you can expect. "H..llo .om, di. .ou .get m. messa... yes..da."? "..s, s.n!, we had a gr..t.me .t ..e pic..c". Then nothing.....re-dial and the same thing. You think I'm kidding? Buy this crap and you'll see.

Just spend 10+ hours of trouble shooting and arguing with magic jack chat that I had to place this review. Purchased Magic Jack in 09/2011 and received the jack on 9/29/2012 Followed the instruction and get the jack working. 5/15/2012 see the ad to upgrade for multi-year service and after almost 6 month of usage and seems to be ok, extended for the 5 additional year. On 5/29/2012. MJ failed. I cannot call a local North Texas Toll Authority (NTTA) phone number and it keep telling me that I need to pay for oversea service. I lived in Plano TEXAS and it is only 3 miles from the NTTA office. It really does not make any sense to have to buy over sea service. Cannot call to MJ for any voice support service, only chat session. Spend 3 hours checking with them and no response. Their answer is only that for some services, we have to pay for it. They do not know what service it is until you try to call and got the voice mail that you need to buy that service. I did not buy and opted to use my cell phone to call. On 6/4/2012, I had to call another phone number with NTTA. Same problem. After another 3 hours of trouble shooting with MJ tech. give up. On 8/17/2012. MJ can receive calls on the phone connected to it but cannot call out. Chat with MJ tech on 8/17/2012. After 3 hours of working with their tech, doing upgrade download, activation, changing phones, changing cable wire, changing pc from window 7 to window XP. Escalate to their top 10% TECH. when I was place on hold for their top tech for 20 minutes I gave up. I had to go to work. 8/18/2012. Chat with mj tech again. Ask them to review the chat session so do not have to go through the same trouble shooting again. I had to stay with the tech and went through the same upgrade download, change phone, change phone cables, change PC. Insist that they move me up to their top tech and only managed to get to their top 10% tech. After another 3 hours of trouble shooting and have to wait for their top tech again. I cannot afford another round of time to trouble shoot. I had to get to work again. ended the chat session. MJ tech do not work on Sunday 8/19 so cannot trouble shoot and get resolution. Have to wait till 8/20. 8/20, chat with mj again. I insist that they immediately escalate to their top tech with the chat log number I kept and pass on to them. After about 30 minutes, finally got pass onto Cherry. Went through another round of 2 hours of trouble shooting. finally convince them that the mj failed and should be replaced as they do not have any other idea of downloading SW to fix anything. Cherry is suppose to be the top tech. They insisted that I need to pay $10.47 shipping fee. They explain that it is USPS that charge it. Turns out it really is a shipping and handling. So not just a shipping charge. MJ is looking more like a beta service. not quite stable if the HW can fail in less than 1 year. I feel being ripped off even though it is $10.47 because their unit failed and they would not replace it unless I pay this inflated shipping and handling. Be prepare to spend hours if there is any problem on chat session. Service have a lot more to improve. They seem to have a procedure that each time you call them, you have to go through the upgrade, etc so be prepared to spend upward of more than 3 hours each session in trouble shooting with them. Be prepare to pay $10.47 shipping cost for their so call "free replacement". I would think the shipping cost actually would have covered their manufacturing cost of the unit and the USPS shipping charge. So I am really paying another $10 for the unit. If this will fail again in another 10 month. I could be looking at paying for another magic jack or my extended service cannot be used. So watch out on these so call multi-year service. You may have to buy another unit in every 10 months to keep using this service. Magic Jack is cheap but compare to other service such as google phone, they are not the best deal. Especially when you are looking to be buying another unit every 10 month or so. Good luck if you want to try them. One thing that really bugs me-- Why do I have to convince MJ that their unit failed!. I offer for them to use access to my pc so they can see what is in my pc and be able to trouble shoot faster. They cannot. They keep asking if my unit is physically broken. I had to keep telling them it is physically in the same shape as I had received it. Today is 8/29. I am still awaiting for the replacement jack. Pretty frustrating.

I Don't understand this company. My service was cut off. When I did a live chat, I was told that my account was under review. This was about a year ago. When I finally realized that they were not going to call me or email me, I simply purchased a new unit. It worked fine until it came time to renew. I tried to renew but my renewal was rejected. I want to renew and I want the service but they won't let me. I asked them to tell me if I had been fired. No results. Live chat is useless. The phone number for billing is staffed by Nurse Rachet or a close relative. She won't listen to your comments and if you ask for a supervisor, she just hangs up. I am now in the process of finding a new provider.

It really depends on what you need and what you don't need from this service. If you just want a straight up inbound/outbound phone service, I have not had a single problem with MagicJack. Call quality is pretty good and I haven't been disconnected yet. If you are looking to use advanced features, forget about it. Only half of them actually work and talking to Tech Support is insanely abysmal. I have never seen less knowledgeable staff working for someone in my entire life. When they can't figure it out, they tell you it will be functional within 24 hours. I have been on with tech support every single day since I received my MagicJack and each time has been for at least an hour. They still can not fix my problem. I chose the option to only elect outbound service and we receive inbound calls all the time. To get around this, I had to setup call forwarding to my cell phone so we at least won't get calls to our house.

Magic Jack service is supposed to include E-mail notification and recording of phone messages. This service only worked intermittently the whole time I had the Magic Jack. Customer service took ages to reach, online chat often disconnected mid-chat. Fed up, I switched back to my cable provider's phone service. Kept Magic Jack number. Magic Jack charged me $31 to port their number over to another carrier. What a rip-off!!

it began getting worse as time went on. I called and they said it was my provider so I contacted my provider, they tested my line and said it is performing better then average. I know I have not noticed any drop in interent service....D/L and U/L speeds seem normal. So I called Magic jack back and they were jerks, didn't care and had no interest in helping me get it fixed. After my complaint I started getting a ton of pop up ads from Magic Jack telling me I needed a software upgrade. So I clicked the link, the software updated and then a month later I find a $30 charge on my card for some international calling plan from Magic Jack. The upgrade ads are deceiving and trick you into clicking the link with the additional costs in very tiny print. You have to really hunt for it to find it. I thought it was a normal software upgrade not a purchase for international calls. I called them concerning the charge and they insisted I ordered international service....Wouldn't do anything and were downright rude. I don't even know anyone overseas! Fast forward to the end of my first year. I intentionally did not sign up for auto-renew on my billing so I could change providers. (They use pop-ups to trick you into selecting auto-renew) My service expired as scheduled and a month later I find a UNAUTHORIZED charge on my card for the next year of service when my Magic Jack was already turned off. I called and they were rude and said that they would not refund the charge on my card. I ended up having to dispute the charge on my credit card to force them to refund it. MAGIC JACK IS TERRIBLE AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM!!!!

VISITOR/PROVIDER FEEDBACK:

Comment by Raven on 6/19/2013 : I had to actually go to my bank & change my acct #s to prevent them from charging my debit card! after I didn't renew my LOUSY service with them they renewed it without my ok & my bank kindly refunded my acct, charged them for the reversal for an unordered service....why would a bank be so willing & easy? BECAUSE THE BANK MANAGER'S SON ALSO HAD THE SAME ISSUE! Guess all in all I just got lucky.

The Owner seems arrogant and has no sense of service. Calls are handled like a cookbook when and if you can get through. My last attempt resulted in 5 dropped calls before having a real exchange of IM's addressing the problem(s). Emphasis is on attempting to get you to purchase an upgrade or more of their substandard equipment. Cosiderable static and sporadic transmission (only being able to hear every 4th or 5th word) on both ends of the conversation) left the other party and me no choice but to hang up. Have already switched to another VOIP and the difference is like night and day. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" seems true in this case. Seemed worthwhile albeit not perfect the first year. Renewed for 5 years and it has been a continuous nightmare ever since. I encouraged a couple of my friends to try it that first year. At least two did but both discontinued using it after a few months because of it's unreliability. That is why I am at this site. To spare others and to see the reviews of other VOIP's. Think I made a good choice this time. There are several VOIP Service Providers and "Service" is the key word. Customer satisfaction is not in MagicJack's vocabulary.
