4Voice Review by WhichVoIP

The Company

4Voice, headquarted in Boca Raton, Florida, was founded in 2007 and is a privately held company with 4 co-founders (which maybe helped them with their brand name!) who came from Siemens. They have around 25 employees and have over 10,000 users of their services. That will definitely change in 2020 as they acquired nexVortex in March, taking over their hosted voice business.

4Voice provides hosted VoIP solutions to small and medium sized businesses. They also offer SMS texting services (from desktop or mobile App), SIP trunking services, call center solutions and toll free services. Our review will focus on the business phone service offering.

The Good

The cloud hosted business phone service plan is called 2Connect. Pricing seems pretty straight forward, with the Standard phone service option being $30 per user and the Basic phone service option being $10 per user. They also have a conference bridge option for $10. Pricing is recurring monthly and there is no indication on their website regarding any tiered pricing (i.e. price breaks per number of users). There is also no information regarding the difference between Standard and Basic service.

The 2Connect plan includes all calls within the continental United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Hawaii and Alaska calling is considered International dialing and hence calls are billed at the relevant per minute rates. We were unable to find these rates on their website but International calling rates are available to all destinations that they support (outside of the USA).

There are a lot of features included in the plan. Call features include call blocking, call forwarding, call hold, call monitoring, call park, call queuing, call recording, call transfer, call waiting and caller ID. Other features include do not disturb, ring groups, auto-attendant, dial-by-name, find me/follow me, paging, voicemail and 3-way calling. As they offer call center solutions they have features more aligned with that industry also, such as whisper/barge/listen in, different ring methods, and analytics and reporting on calls.

There are some add-on features that require additional monthly rates. Internet fax is one which costs $5 per user per month. This allows you to send and receive faxes by email. If you still need to use a hardware fax machine they have a plan for $20 per month to cover that service (analog line). Another add-on service is for toll free numbers. They have a few plans starting with the Standard toll free plan for $10 per month, which includes 100 minutes of inbound calls and then 5c per minute after that. The Premium toll free plan includes 500 minutes of inbound calls per month for $25 per month. Additional minutes will cost 4.5c per minute. The Elite toll free plan includes 1,000 minutes of inbound calls for $45 per month, with additional minutes being charged at 4c per minute.

They offer a VoIP SMS/Texting service also. You can use a mobile App on your smartphone for this service or use their desktop App or web interface on laptops and desktop computers (iOS and Windows compatible). It includes contacts and message history in a user friendly interface. You can send photos, videos, and group texts using their built-in MMS capabilities. There is no pricing information for this service and it is not clear whether it is included in the 2Connect plan or whether it is available as a standalone service.

4Voice offers two main options for making/receiving phone calls, IP phones or their 4Voice Communicator Softphone. Their softphone App runs on your computer and allows you to chat, call, or video conference with employees and customers. They state that a license to use their softphone is cheaper than a desk phone and provides more functionality but there is no indication of price. For IP phones they offer Polycom VVX3xx/4xx/6xx desk phones, the Trio 8500 conference phone, and the D60 cordless phone. There is no pricing on the phones they support.

Customer support is available 24/7 and you can dial 7777 from any of your 4Voice phones to access support. You can also dial a toll free number or email them for support. They have teamviewer support on their website so they provide remote support through your computer if needed.

If you only need SIP trunking services then they offer a VoIP connectivity plan called 2Link at $20 per channel. If you are interested in their call center solutions you will need to contact them directly for pricing.

The Bad

There are no terms of service available on the website. This is typically where an Acceptable Use Policy is found with respect to unlimited calling definitions. If you think you will use a high number of minutes we recommend checking with them in case there are any limits.

It is not clear what the difference is between Standard and Basic phone service and what is included for the $30 and $10 per user pricing respectively.

It is not clear if all the call center type features are available with the 2Connect plan. They may keep certain features separate based on what type of service you need.

It is not clear if the VoIP SMS/Texting plan is a standalone plan or whether it is included with the 2Connect VoIP plan. Also there is no pricing so if this is something of interest we recommend checking first.

There also is no pricing for use of their Communicator Softphone App or the Polycom phones.

There is mention of multiple Apps and it is not clear if one covers all needs (i.e. VoIP SMS plan, softphone, account management etc.) or whether you end up having to use multiple Apps.

The Bottom Line

  • Standard phone service is $30 per user with a Basic plan option at $10 per user. Pricing is per month.
  • Internet Fax service costs $5 per user per month. Analog line for hardware fax machine is $20 per month.
  • Toll free plans available starting at $10 per month for 100 minutes inbound calling per month, and 5c per minute for overage.
  • Polycom VVX 3xx/4xx/6xx phones supported. Softphone also available with license fee.
  • Customer support is 24/7, simply dial 7777 to access from any 4Voice extension.
  • SIP trunking available at $20 per channel.

Overall Thoughts

4Voice looks to be a good solid voice solution for small to medium sized businesses. They have some interesting features like the VoIP SMS service, albeit a little unclear how this ties in with the 2Connect VoIP calling plans.

Reading through their website they definitely put some emphasis on their 24/7 customer support and white glove service, including one on one training. We recommend checking them out further but be sure to ask plenty of questions.
