ITP Review by WhichVoIP

ITP, short for Internet Telephone Provider, was founded in New York in 2005. They provide residential and small business VoIP phone service plans at competitive rates and are accommodating to tailoring plans to individual users.

The Good

Over 40 features are included free, including toll free number blocking, call forwarding, call recording, and voicemail to email.

Call quality is generally reported as above average to strong, with the best reception found on calls to VoIP lines and landlines.

ITP offers good customer service and maintains an easy to use website that has clear resources for customers, including installation and porting guides. Their customer service and sales teams are based only in the USA.

A phone adapter, which can support two lines, comes as a free lease with plan signup.

Also free with their phone plans is an app for smartphone owners, which allows user to make international calls using a cell phone. Their App is available for both Apple and Android devices. They also have a VoIP App plan add-on for $9.99/month that includes 500 minutes per month and a free phone number.

Plans are available without contract signup and ITP does not charge a disconnect fee when cancelling an account. They also provide two (2) months free on any plan and monthly payments so you don't have to prepay for a full year. This helps make their plans price competitive for the first year of use.

Various additional services are available as plan add-ons for an extra charge per month. These include services such as virtual fax, virtual numbers (domestic and international), fax, global cell, toll free, and a softphone. The fax option is a dedicated fax line for an additional $9.99/mo and includes 250 pages per month plus a free dedicated fax number.

They offer a 30-day money back guarantee which will refund your service fee. This is only offered on the single line plans. Cancellation must be within 30 days of activation and you must use less than 500 minutes between activation and cancellation. Any additional fees (like international calling, directory assistance calls etc) will be charged at the appropriate rates.

When porting your phone number you have a few choices, including making your existing number into a virtual number which then rings your assigned ITP phone number or vice versa. The virtual number feature incurs a cost of $4.99 per month though but is a neat option.

ITP offer paperless billing, which many people prefer over receiving the bill in the mail.

The Bad

Plans start at a low initial rate, but premium features typically require an additional monthly fee. This can be good and bad as it provides flexibility in building a custom set of services, but some of these features are provided free with other providers.

ITP charges an unspecified activation fee on new plans.

If service is cancelled, expect to be charged through the remainder of the current billing cycle. Also, note that you will be required to send back the phone adaptor if you cancel service so keep your equipment in good condition and keep the box, manuals etc so you can send it back if you do ever cancel.

For the 30-day money back guarantee to be in effect you must use less than 500 minutes. If you exceed this amount you will not be eligible for a refund. Note that you must send any equipment back within the following 30 days of cancellation. If not you may be charged the full amount to replace it.

The two free months special promotion provides the 1st month and 12th month free, which means you have to remain a customer for a full year to benefit from the reduced pricing.

There is a $50 charge for porting a Canadian phone number.

Phone support is unavailable during weekends and holidays, which may be of particular concern to residential customers. It is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am to 6pm EST.

ITP's service may not be compatible with security systems and other non-voice services that can use a telephone line to work. This is typical with VoIP services though.

The Bottom Line

  • Basic Plan ($9.99/mo): Unlimited inbound calls with 500 free outbound minutes anywhere in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
  • Unlimited Plan ($19.99/mo): Unlimited inbound and outbound calls anywhere in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico charged at a flat monthly rate.
  • Global Plan ($24.99/mo): Unlimited inbound and outbound calls within the US and over 60 other countries.
  • Two Line Plans: You can select any of the above 3 plans but with two phone lines instead of one. These plans are charged at almost twice the cost of the above plans though ($18.99/mo for the Basic plan, $38.99/mo for the Unlimited plan, and $48.99/mo for the Global plan). The Basic plan includes 1,000 minutes instead of 500 minutes also.
  • Home Office Plan ($49.99/mo): The Home Office Plan includes an auto-attendant and music on hold, as well as 2 phone lines and 2 phone numbers. It also includes unlimited inbound/outbound calling in the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico, as well as all their features.
  • Add-ons: Virtual fax is $9.99/mo, virtual numbers are $4.99/mo, a dedicated fax line is $9.99/mo, the VoIP App add-on plan is $9.99/mo, the global cell add-on is $4.99/mo, toll free numbers are $4.99/mo, and the softphone add-on is $9.99/mo.
  • Additional Fees: International calling is charged at their current rates which are low. Plan pricing does not include taxes and other regulatory fees.
  • Business Plans: They also offer hosted PBX plans and SIP trunking for businesses. Prices start from $19.99/person/mo. You can call them directly for custom pricing based on your business needs.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, ITP offers a fair, competitive service which is generally low cost if the primary plans cover most user needs. Services favor residential and small business usage. If you fit into either of those categories, ITP is a good candidate. Be sure to browse through WhichVoIP's user reviews to see more firsthand opinions.
