Claritytel Review by WhichVoIP

The Company

Claritytel was founded in 2003 and is headquarted in Lawrenceville, Georgia. In the beginning it was simply Clarity, but over time they have evolved into ClarityTel, probably in an effort to be more obvious that they are a Telecom business offering hosted VoIP solutions to small and medium sized businesses.

The Good

Claritytel's main focus is on providing hosted VoIP phone services to small businesses with their sweet spot being in the 1 to 50 seat range. This review will focus on the hosted VoIP service. However, they do offer a few other solutions, including VoIP fax solutions, often referred to as Internet Fax (or eFax), as well as offering a solution for traditional fax machines, and some Advanced solutions such as SIP Trunks.

They have two Internet Fax plans referred to as vFax and vFax+. For $11.99 per month the vFax plan includes 300 pages per month usage and for $14.99 per month the vFax+ plan offers 500 pages per month usage. Under Advanced solutions they offer SIP Trunks at $19.99 per trunk, Advanced Auto Attendant, Store Locator Service, Receptionist Call Manager, Call Queue Management, Call Recording Module, Voice and Fax Broadcasting, and a Live Answering Service. You can find out more about these solutions at their website.

There is only one business VoIP voice plan that includes all the features. Pricing is based on tiers of 1 to 9 users, 10 to 24 users, 25 to 50 users and 50+ users. Pricing starts at $19.99 per month per user for the lowest tier, then $17.99 per month per user for 10 to 24 users, then $14.99 for 25+ users. This is very competitive pricing making it a compelling option for smaller businesses.

At the time of writing there are 32 features detailed on the website. Plan features include unlimited calling to USA, Canada and Puerto Rico, local number selection, number porting if required, 911 service, directory assistance listing, and an online dashboard for configuration and management. Call features include call blocking, caller ID, call waiting, do not disturb, call park, call hold, call record, call transfer, call logs, ring groups, find me follow me, music on hold, time of day routing, and voicemail (with email delivery). Productivity features include a webphone, softphone, video conferencing, conference calling capabilities, ClarityTel Apps, ClarityTel mobile connect, group paging/intercom, night mode and BLF/presence.

A support/help section is available on their website and is neatly organized with resources broken down into sections for user guides, hardware setup guides, FAQ guides and a VoIP test. You can also use their search tool to search keywords and phrases. However the actual available information is sparse. As an example the VoIP hardware guides basically contain the user guides from the IP phone manufacturers.

Customer support is available 24/7 via a toll free number and you can fill in a form on their website to contact them also.

You can purchase a selection of IP phones directly from Claritytel, although they seem on the high side price wise. Options include some Snom phones, Yealink phones, Polycom phones and a Grandstream DECT (cordless) phone. They also mention that if you do not see a phone you want you can contact them.

The Bad

Pretty much all VoIP service providers have some form of acceptable/fair usage policy and Claritytel are no different here. In their terms of service they reference 3,000 minutes of usage per line per month as being their yard stick for measurement, as well as some other unusual usage patterns. So if you excede their requirements then expect contact from them.

The support/help center on their website is a little sparse so you may well have to contact their support for help.

Don't bother with their "Hosted VoIP Calculator" tool under their website menu "Customized Pricing" (and also linked from a button on the main page). We thought this had the makings of a neat tool but it basically spits you out on another landing page that requires you to provide all your information again to get a real quote. Just contact them directly if you need a real quote.

They also seem to have several pages that really just express the same information and most likely created for SEO purposes.

The Bottom Line

  • One standard plan with pricing based on number of users.
  • Pricing starts at $19.99 per month per user for a business with 1 to 9 users.
  • Pring is $17.99 per user per month if you have a business with 10 to 24 users
  • Pring is $14.99 per user per month if you have 25+ users
  • Regardless of price tier the plan includes 30+ features. As well as standard calling features they also have webphone, softphone and video calling.
  • The plan includes a local phone number, and unlimited calling in US/CAN and Puerto Rico.
  • They quote 24/7 customer service and 99.999% uptime.

Overall Thoughts

Claritytel are well placed to service the small business market of 1 to 50 users, with competitive pricing, a solid feature set, and 24/7 customer service. Their online help section is a little sparse but they show a toll free number for support so you should be able to call with any questions or issues. We recommend giving them a call to see how responsive they are if customer service is a key requirement for you.
