OnSIP Review by WhichVoIP

OnSIP is owned by Junctions Networks and offers hosted PBX phone service and SIP trunking solutions for businesses. The company was founded in 2004 and is located in Manhattan, New York. It is a popular and feature laden phone service that is trusted and used by over 15,000 businesses in the United States, some of which are well known brands such as Mozilla, Tumblr, Cloudera and Disqus.

The Good

While some VoIP providers offer metered plans that are a fixed monthly rate plus a per minute fee, OnSIP takes a different approach by offering a pay as you go plan with a base rate of $0 per month, plus a per minute charge for calls. Although there is a monthly minimum fee that this plan requires, it is still a great and likely very cheap option for business phone service. Alternatively, there is a metered calling plan and unlimited calling plan available that are similar to what most other VoIP providers offer.

The company also has a somewhat different approach to others when it comes to its SIP trunking offering. SIP trunking providers typically charge a monthly rate that is based upon the number of channels or trunks that you purchase. Although some providers do offer unmetered or metered plan options, there is normally a base monthly fee for the metered plan in addition to usage charges. With onSIP, as long as you open an account with the monthly minimum fee, there is no specific base fee for the metered plan that charges only for usage.

Like almost every business VoIP provider, OnSIP will both recommend and sell you IP phones (if you need them) when you sign up for its phone service, and has partnered with the Telephony Depot to facilitate this, and help in offering competitive pricing. Besides just making phone recommendations, they review each phone in detail and list each phones detailed evaluation on their website.

An admin portal is provided and allows the user to set up and configure all their phone system features of which there are plenty. The basics include personal and auto-attendant, voicemail, dial by name directory, call park, HD music on hold, business hour routing and the standard set of call management features. Other features include Outlook integration, simultaneous ring on up to 10 numbers, free SIP domain hosting and find me anywhere.

Other cool solutions/features for the business user include instant web calling (a WebRTC based solution) for voice and video calling directly from a web browser, CRM integrations (Zendesk and Highrise), API's for developers and Mobile solutions (utilizing a SIP mobile app for your Smartphone). They also have a Unified Communications solution, with IM, presence, voicemail and web based calling.

A free 30-day trial is available. This is always a good sign as it shows they stand behind their service and allows you to try it out before making any major phone service switch for your business.

The Bad

Even though they have a Pay as You Go plan that is $0/user/month there is a minimum charge of $49.95/month. This makes the plan more viable for businesses with at least 5 employees or more. The Per Seat Metered Plan has a 5 user minimum requirement which is also not a great option for a very small business. OnSIP does now offer a more traditional unlimited plan at a competitive price that would likely be attractive to most companies, but again there is a 5 user minimum requirement.

Any pre-paid credits expire 90 days from the date they are added to your account. A credit card must be provided on sign-up.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but the SIP Mobile Apps are from 3rd parties. It does provide some options to the user, but potentially difficult to get any possible issues fixed.

The Bottom Line

  • Pay as You Go Plan: This plan is $0 per person per month but there is a minimum of $49.95 per month. This is made up with selected additional features (certain features are included in the $49.95 charge such as 5 voicemail boxes, 3 auto-attendants, 3 ring groups etc.) plus per minute usage (2.9c/minute for inbound/outbound calling).
  • Per Seat Metered Plan: This plan starts at $8.95/user/month, but has a 5 user minimum requirement. This plan includes many of their features with some premium ones being additional fees per month. Minute usage is charged at 2.9c/minute (inbound and outbound).
  • Unlimited User Plan: Priced at $24.95 per user per month for unlimited standard area calling. A 5 user minimum is required.
  • Additional Fees: Phone numbers cost $7 for setup and $2/month. Number porting is $15/number. E911 service is available at $1.80/month/seat. Inbound toll-free calls are charged at 3.9c/minute. International calling can be enabled through the admin portal and are charged separately at their current rates, although they do have in the region of 28 countries included in their "standard calling area" charged at 2.9c/minute. Any regulatory and local/state/federal taxes that are appropriate will be added to the monthly cost.

Overall Thoughts

OnSIP provide an interesting choice for businesses that have 5+ employees and lower phone usage. You pay for the amount of minutes used so expect monthly bills to vary but the plan options are very simple and flexible. You can choose between a hosted solution or SIP trunking for your on-premise PBX. Outside of the many features that come reasonably standard these days with VoIP technology, they also have some neat solutions like instant web calling (utilizing WebRTC standards) and recommended SIP Mobile Apps that make your smartphones, laptops and tablets act like desk phones (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows devices).

ONSIP was the best choice for us hands-down because of their pay as you go plan. We saved a lot of money because our call volume is relatively low, with the exception of a few sales people? but even they have been getting rid of their work cell phone plans (slowly but surely), which really saves us a lot in total. They like being able to extension dial and transfer calls to our main office. We also use MY.ONSIP to IM and see who is on the phone, etc. ONSIP was easy to set up. We use Polycoms- I highly recommend for sound quality.

We liked the ability to add users without seat licensing cost. We really like the fact we pay for actual minutes used. It was fairly straightforward to set up the virtual PBX and program all our Polycomm phones with OnSips instructions & assistance. We had a couple of sticking point & they were quick to respond to us. We have used OnSip now for 2 years & have no plans to change; we love it.

Moved to Onsip from another provider that charged us a flat rate per month per user which seems like the industry standard. The pay as you go pricing at Onsip is saving us a decent amount of money and the solution easily integrated with our existing Polycom phones and it was easy to setup. The management interface is easy to use and easy to make any changes to the system such as moving phones around. Great cost effective phone solution for a small business like ours.
