ViaTalk residential is a competitive VoIP service that offers a few unique features. Founded in 2003 as a division of HostRocket.com, they are considered a stable and financially secure enterprise. They claim to strive for unparalleled customer service and high quality calls, as made possible by their fiber optic network.
The GoodViaTalk offers around 40 features for subscribers. Standard features offered with the residential plan include voicemail, caller ID and call waiting. Premium features such as virtual numbers, toll-free numbers, and fax lines are also available.
They claim that their call quality is comparable to or better than traditional landlines.
Two phone lines are provided for the price of one with the standard residential plan, allowing users to receive or place calls on two separate lines simultaneously. The two-line configuration operates via two separate extensions that are universal across all ViaTalk provisioned devices. This is one of the biggest draws of the service compared to other providers.
ViaTalk is also supported on iPhone through their free iPhone app. Most account features can also be accessed through this app. However, it should be noted that the iOSapp has not been updated since 2009.
Technical support is available online and via a toll-free number. Live chat is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Toll free support is available between 9 am - 10 pm EST, Monday through Friday, and 10 am - 10 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Having support available at the weekends is great if you work long hours in the week. Not all providers include weekend support.
Adapter installation guides for their supplied adapters are also available through the website.
A 14 Day Money Back Guarantee is applicable to all new accounts. This is a great way to take their service for a test drive to see if it works for you. Note that any activation fees and shipping fees will not be refunded, as well as use of any of their premium services that incur additional charges.
The BadIf service is cancelled prior to the end of a contract, pre-paid months will be refunded. However, a Disconnect fee of $49.95 will be charged per cancelled phone line. Users may be charged twice, as plans generally include two phone lines. If the provided hardware, such as a phone adapter, is not returned within 30 days of cancellation, a $50 Hardware Return fee will be charged. A range of fees will also be applied based on the condition of the adapter and its components upon return. Make sure you keep all the packaging, cables, power supply and adapter in good condition.
For the unlimited plan, customers are restricted to an expected maximum usage of 5,100 minutes a month. Though the plan is not truly unlimited, it includes more minutes than many other competitors' unlimited plans, which are typically capped at around 3,000 minutes. Overage fees are charged at 1.9c per minute used.
In user reviews the most common complaints are related to the aforementioned charges and a lack of awareness regarding cancellation fees and equipment return fees, as well as inconsistent service performance.
ViaTalk is not currently a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited company and holds an F rating.
The Bottom Line
Overall ThoughtsIn terms of features and minutes ViaTalk is a good provider for those looking for an alternative to their current residential phone plan. Prices are competitive and special promotions can further lower costs. The ability to have two unique phone lines is a major draw for the service, particularly for larger families, and the addition of mobile support is also enticing. However, it seems their service has declined in recent years, as noted by their lack of an updated phone app and declining review scores.

Viatalk is one of the most reviewed companies on WhichVoIP with over 200 reviews and growing. We have been gathering feedback on its services since the early days of our own existence stretching all the way back to 2005. With so many reviews or Viatalk available, it can however be a bit overwhelming to get a feel for what the company and its services are like. I don't hesitate to recommend them

RIP-OFF! CANCELLATION fees up the wazoo, even though you've had an account for YEARS! THEY DON'T CARE! Don't even THINK about these guys... go with ANYONE else. You will REGRET ANY business with ViaTalk.

I've used ViaTalk for several years now and recommend them to others including my brother. I find the service/price ratio outstanding! Through the years I've only encountered minor issues that were resolved to my satisfaction. I can't speak for other VOIPs but ViaTalk replaced AT&T and I found no degradation in quality but do have more options to better use my phone. I now have two lines (same number) with a two-line phone there is never a problem with someone getting a busy signal when calling me nor a problem calling out when someone is on the other line. Also, I love blocking unwanted tele-markerters with busy signals or ringing (that I can't hear). I figure it helps level with the times they bugged me during dinner! Thumbs up.....

I've had Viatalk for a few years now. It can work perfectly for months, and then be months of Hell, and then work fine for months, and then be months of Hell. Problem is, it usually goes out with no warning, and you find out 3 days later your phones don't ring when someone gets sick of VM and calls your cell phone. Fax may, or more usually, may NOT work at any given day. Apparently your settings change themselves regularly, so you call them, and they set something else, and after 3-4 tries you're working again like you did the week before.
BS Buster (Aug 4th, 2014) : I had a ViaTalk account for years. Once I determined they no longer offered a competitive service, I changed to another VOIP provider, and cancelled my account. First, I was warned that if I didn't send back their equipment BEFORE I cancelled my service (NOW worth about $5.00), I would incur a $50.00 equipment fee (and STILL incur charges for their no longer used service). THEN, because I cancelled less than 30 days before my service was due for renewal, they hit me with a $50.00 "early cancellation fee", even after I had an account with them for YEARS! That's how they treat their long-term customers. AVOID these unethical providers at ALL COSTS (OR, as I SHOULD say, WITH ALL THE SAVINGS!). DO NOT engage in a contract with ViaTalk, they are rip-off artists, and nothing more!

SERVICE IS BAD. HAD ONE BOX GO BAD THEN THIS ONE IS USED. GOING BAD SO I AM GOING TO A NEW PHONE SERVICE, BUT WAIT THEY TAKE 50.00 DOLLARS OFF YOU JUST TO SAY GOODBYE. THEY ALSO TAKE 50.00 FROM YOU FOR THERE USED EQUIPMENT WHICH ONLY COST ABOUT 50.00 TO START OFF. THEY RIP YOU OFF COMING OR GOING. FILE WITH THE BBB. THEY HAVE A GRADE OF C. I GIVE THEM A F.

Wanted to note that as a former ViaTalk customer (2 years of service), they recently starting sending billing notices almost 5 years after I stopped service. They appear to have many more people working in billing than they do in customer service.

Pros: I have moved from 3 different states, and so far the service not been interrupted. Cons: They do not respond to trouble tickets placed online, you must call for them to take action. When setting up service it involves a lot of paperwork esp if you are porting over another number.

Like many other customers of viatalk I find myself unable to use my phone service at all. I either cannot make a call (unavailability beeping tone) or the phone conversation get dropped (I can hear my correspondent but he/she can no longer hear me after about 10-15 minutes on the call), I cannot hear correspondent when I pick up the phone. Customer support is making apparently changes in my phone adapter every single time I contact them and I aks me to try out the new changes. I was using 8x8 prior to viatalk and the service was 1000 times better (I changed only to have a cheaper plan and it was a terrible error). Besides the fact that it is not working, I end up using my cell phone more which results in me paying for cell phone bill so I'm not saving any money and everyone calling me and using my phone at home is irritated. STAY AWAY FROM VIATALK if you intend to use your phone.

Researched a few and tried 2 others. Going on 4th year. Great service with better customization. Not a fancy webpage, but don't care! Setting changes all work, every time I need to change them. Two lines, can block calls over 12 ways! If I'm gonna pay anything, this makes it more than worth it. Hope more can get these benefits.
