While Sunrocket offers an inexpensive VOIP service, their sound quality is quite poor. It often degrades to the point where I have to call using a land line or cell phone to complete a conversation. There is often an echo or a slight delay in conversations being transmitted.
Sunrocket's technical support is quite mediocre as well. Apart from the customary "It must be your equipment" excuse that all technology companies employ when they don't know how to fix things, Sunrocket has never fixed any technical issue very quickly... typically days pass before anything is resolved. Once, several months ago, I couldn't call any toll free number.. the phone simply wouldn't ring. After initially denying that there was a problem, they then admitted that something was wrong and two days later, everything was fine again. What is worse, however, is that they are unethical. I signed up a year ago for a year contract with three free months. Now, 12 months later, they are claiming that I didn't qualify for the 3 free months. There's no way to prove that I am, so I'm stuck. Adios, Sunrocket.
I have had SR for over a year and have had a mixed experience. Signed up 11/05 and the first gizmo was doa. The second had problems but a better tech support was able to reset. Net result about 3 wks from order to actual working phone. When it works the sound quality is better than the land line. When it doesn't it takes a fair amount of time a patience to try to resolve. Problems I have had were:
1 - when people call they would get a message that the line was not connected
2 - phone wouldn't ring
3 - when talking to someone without warning they couldn't hear me but I could hear them.
4 - occasionally a poor connection
5 - Tech support sends me email stating that they tried to reach me in a series of calls
with the times. I know I was home some of those times but the phone never rang. I email
mail them back as they only give a general tech # that screens the calls.
6- Faxing unreliable.
7- doesn't work with Medicare PCace bbs.
I have run a broadband speed test SR recommended. It was useful the first time because I used it to get the cable company to test my line. they service guy was great. He ended up replacing all the connectors in the house and out to the street. My speed tripled to 5-6Mbps. However, that didn't fully resolve connection problems.
More recently, the phone seems to be working very well except for problem #5. #6 I having reexamined since I had to get a landline to get a reliable fax and connect to a bbs. I don't know if this is any better or worse than other VOIPs. SR is worth a try but be prepared to invest time when problems are encountered. They are immature businesses compared to landline phone companies. I moved and may try ViaTalk now.
I ordered my Sunrocket back in July 2006. I did port my home phone number, and it took less than a week for them to complete the port from start to finish. They give you a free signature
number. I live in NC and wanted a VA number. They were able to switch that over for me (from a default NC number) in a few days. As far as the sound quality, I hear a very rare echo every now and then and sometimes it is tough for the remote party to hear me on speakerphone (could be the phone, could be the service). There is breaking up when I use the phone and internet at the same time, but only because I switched to a lower speed (256k). When I had a higher speed, it worked flawlessly. The sound quality is still very good, as good as my former landline. I love the online portal, missed calls, voicemail, unlimited minutes (thank God because we sit on the phones all the time, which were free from Sunrocket, by the way). All in all, Sunrocket is a great deal for the money. We pay a little bit more now ($44), for highspeed internet and phone service, than we did for dialup and limited landline phone service, before ($40); so you can see that it is a great deal.
I got my first SunRocket line about 14 months ago. The beginning was fairly rough. But they
seemed to have ironed out their issues. I had several service outages in the first few months, none in the last year that can be attributed to SunRocket. I recently got a second SunRocket line. Here's what I like. First, I make a few, not a lot of foreign calls, mostly to the UK, France, Germany. Verizon had amazingly horrible rates, over $1 per minute to these. I also had a VOIP line with Optimum (my broadband provider). Their service was good, but foreign calls require a subscription of about $17 per month. SunRocket has 2 or 3 cent per minute service to these locations with no subscription required. My typical usage is less than $5 per month.
The features are also good. You can set up multiple forwarding, you get two phone numbers, and they transfer your old number. I have also had good luck with my FAX machine, something that is often troublesome with VOIP services. The latest VOIP adaptor is a LinkSys which works well. It's much more reliable than their early hardware and easy to setup, and they include a wireless phone with the subscription. In short, if you don't mind laying out the $199 per year you get a very good service. The reliability is now as good as my broadband, the problems I have now all relate to either service issues with my broadband, or with my own gateway router.
Sunrocket charged me the $199 for my yearly contract, then charged me the same amount
$199 the next month. I opened a ticket with them and it has now been over a month without any refund. they know there is a problem and just keep telling me they are working on it. I finally told them to take a hike. Its amazing how they can refund my first $199 in only a couple days but the 2nd $199 is "still working on it" Avoid this company at all costs, I'm now going to Viatalk.
If you have been thinking about switching to VOIP and saving a ton of cash Sunrocket is your best choice. I researched for a year and after a professional IT person recommended Sunrocket I took a chance. It is awesome!!! Equal if not better than regular phone. You can
hook it to all your jacks (get a pro if your not sure) and it is feature rich and with a money back guarantee you have nothing to lose. 13.95 per month with the 3 months free why would you not switch. I am the most critical person and now that I have it the question I keep asking is why didn't I do it sooner. Sunrocket's customer service is awesome and you will be pleasantly surprised. This company is the best kept secret in the industry. Just do it and keep the extra cash for your family.
I am on my second year with Sunrocket, so I/they must be doing something right. Had one
problem in midterm with dialing local hospital number, and this took three days to resolve. This delay was strictly a Customer Service non-response problem, not an equipment problem on my end. Calls are clear, set up was a snap, followed instructions as received in the box. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is when you renew they do not give you anything extra! Not even a thank you or a kiss. ha ha Do I recommend this service, all I can say is it works very well for me. As noted in many other reviews, customer service is bad, but have you really found any company with great CS lately? Luck of the draw on who answer the phone.........
I signed up for Sunrocket service in January 2006, and today it is February 2007. I only hooked up my Gismo last month. I have been waiting for Sunrocket to transfer my number for a year. I know, I know, I am an idiot. For my defense I have retained the emails sent to
them asking for help. Anyway, as of today Sunrocket has told me that they do not give credits of any kind and that I am out of luck. A supervisor, who refused to give me her name, hung up on me. I really think people should pause before signing up with them if you need to retain your number. Alas, you live and learn. I wish I visited this site and read the other comments detailing my exact situation.
I signed up under a special. SunRocket was to transfer my number. They kept making some mistake in transferring the number and this process was an ongoing process for 4 months since I signed up.
Every time I called up to find the status, I would be assigned a ticket and the ticket would die the next day. I call up again, a new ticket...and so on so forth. I was frustrated and I called to cancel in Jan and returned Gizmo. I called up again in Feb. Behold...my account was active, invoiced, et al. I cancelled again...and they charged me $30 for cancellation. So the bottom line.....I never used Sunrocket, yet I lost 30 bucks. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this service provider. Try SunRocket at your own risk.
I have had Sunrocket since October of 2006 and no problems! the only problem is when I try to download files that are about 1 GB and play online games thru the playstation 2 and talk on the phone it does tend to break up, but thats due to the bandwidth of verizon DSL. As of this date and time no problems. Two hundred and eight dollars a year is a steal compared to Verizon Vios/Bios. Sunrocket Outstanding!!!*******
I was happy with Sunrocket for the first few months, but then my service went out for 7
days with very little help from CS. They ole' "Were working on it," was the best I could get after working with tier 3 tech support. This happened 2 more times. The last time my service was out for 10 days! I finally cancelled and paid the higher rate from AT&T. It's worth it to have reliable phone service and pay a bit more. Don't know if I would every try something like this again with another company.
I was skeptical before ordering the service, but decided to give a try because of their
money back guarantee. So far the service exceeded my expectations. There are occasional echoes with domestic calls, but mostly is clear and works like my land line. I found more sound quality problems when dialing overseas cell numbers. There was no problem in receiving the equipment or connecting it. It took just 30 seconds to connect and get the phone line working! No dropped calls or line busy issues so far.
