RangaTel Review by WhichVoIP

Founded in 2009, RangaTel focuses on residential service using a similar model to other companies in the same market space. The company maintains an active social media presence so current promotions and sales have great visibility.

The Good

The main RangaTel service is aimed at providing residential service to the US and Canada. The model is similar to popular services like magicJack or Vonage - the customer signs up for service and receives an ATA to connect a home phone to a network. Calls are usually possible after a short registration process.

The company offers a few different pricing tiers for home service. At $9.99 a month, a customer will receive a leased telephone adapter and 500 minutes of calling to anywhere in the US or Canada. The next level is the US and Canada Unlimited plan which offers unlimited calling to any line in these countries for $19.99 a month. The World Plan offers free nationwide calling as well as unlimited calling to 60 countries with low, per-minute rates for those not included at $25.99 a month.

Perhaps one of the most unique services is the India Calling Plan. At $12.99 a month, a customer can call almost anywhere in India and enjoy other RangaTel features. This is an ideal, cost effective solution for the many Indian students and expatriates that currently reside in North America.

Aside from the telephone adapter included with service, a few other methods for utilizing service are available. An access number is available for customers to use other phones, such as mobile devices. A mobile application is available as well for customers to make calls over mobile data networks or WiFi.

Approximately a dozen extra features are included with any service. A customer can utilize 3-way calling, access voicemail online, call other RangaTel customers for free and can upload a custom music file for callers to hear, among a handful of other features.

One of the nice parts about being active on various social media platforms is the accessibility to existing and potential clientele. Because of the popularity of platforms like Facebook and Twitter, it is easier for customers to quickly and effectively establish contact with the company.

A 30-day money back guarantee is available for customers to test the service. Should the service fall short of expectations, customers are entitled to a full refund.

Customer service should not be a problem as they boast a 24/7 support phone number and also have a ticketing system online. A knowledgebase is available online for those that like to troubleshoot themselves.

The Bad

A "reasonable use policy" is in effect for all customers, meaning excessive calling could be subject to certain fees. For residential users there is a cap of 3,000 minutes on their unlimited calling plans (this cap is 10,000 minutes for their business plans). This cap is based on the typical usage of 95% of their customers. Minutes used exceeding this cap are charged at a per minute rate.

Remember, like most VoIP services, the adaptor is "leased" to you as part of the monthly fee. If you cancel the service you will need to send the adaptor back in good working condition and within 10 days on cancellation (remember to keep the packaging!). If you are unable to return the device in good working condition then expect to pay up to $49.99 in charges.

If you decide to terminate your service for any reason then a termination fee of $79.99 per line will be charged to your account. This only applies to customers with a contract.

With respect to the 30-day money back guarantee your usage must not exceed 250 minutes to be eligible.

The Bottom Line

  • Inexpensive VoIP calling starting at $9.99/month that includes all service features and 500 minutes of calls to the US or Canada.
  • Extended plans at $19.99/month feature unlimited calling to the US or Canada.
  • The World Plan includes free calling to 60 countries and inexpensive calls to those not included for $25.99/month.
  • The unique India Plan at $12.99 a month allows users to make unlimited calls to virtually any line in the country.
  • Remember that all plan pricing does not include applicable taxes and regulatory fees.

Overall Thoughts

The residential VoIP market is packed with options but not many are geared toward providing a well-defined international calling solution. RangaTel offers inexpensive solutions for both nationwide calling as well as calls outside the US or Canada.
