I couldn't be happier. They have made so many improvements to an already great service.
Its hard to believe all the features you get. My favorites are a toll free number to check your messages and voicemail to emails. I can get my voicemails at work through email!!! Superior quality service. Highly highly recommended!!
I was surprised how quickly I was up and running. So far virtually no problems. Although after reading many rants about problems, I realize that many who have problems are not geeky
enough to read some of the FAQs and message boards to find solutions and answers to their problems. With any degree of techno-savvy one should have no problem in getting things working properly. I know I may have to contact the billing department since I have been charged a shipping fee and thought shipping was free. Perhaps I needed to put in some sort of a promo code someplace and missed it. My current phone company says that they will not port my number so I may have to keep the phone number assigned by P8 but such is life when all of these companies refuse to cooperate with each other. I suggest not getting the Uniden phone but rather an adapter like the 510. That way if your adapter portion of the Uniden phone goes out you do not have to throw out a good phone or vice versa. I would happily endorse this service ----- so far.
Every person I talk to hears an echo.
I made the mistake of porting my landline # to Packet8 right away! DON'T DO THAT! I had a 30 day trial period....After 2 weeks, my number was ported to Packet8....I was unhappy with the quality...I decided to cancel and go back to my landline phone company. I couldn't cancel until Packet8 ported my phone number back to my landline phone company. I waited on hold for over 30 minutes many many times trying to talk to a human being. They kept delaying and delaying saying that my landline phone company never sent a request. Stall tactics! Packet8 deliberately waited until the trial period was over to hit me with a $59.99 disconnection fee. ADVICE: STAY AWAY from these small internet phone companies...once they getcha, they getcha. You sure get what you pay for!
Beware, while the equipment works alright, the customer service is atrocious. I had packet8
service for several months and decided to go back to a standard landline for quality and bundling issues. I ported my number, and called the cancel my packet8 service. I believed everything was taken care of. Packet8 billed me for 5 subsequent months after the number was ported out, and even after escalating the issue to their supervisors, they refuse to give me credit for the service fees even though there was no number on the account on which to use the service. If you choose to purchase this product, you are warned, you are dealing with an unscrupulous company that is so happy with their terms and conditions that they cannot use reasoning to make a decision.
I have used Packet8 for about 2 years. I have both a Cable modem and DSL at home and
found the quality on cable modem better with no audio problems. No one can tell that I am on a VOIP. I like the feature of having several local numbers around the country. This is the only way to go if you have kids in school or family and friends in another state. The quality has always been good but in the past 6 months it is as good as my regular landline. If you go with VOIP, make sure you put in a UPS to keep your DSL or Cable modem and their VOIP modem running during power outages. Packet8 allows you to setup a number that their numbers will forward to if you are down. This is a GREAT feature. You can not delete virtual numbers through the web. It is a pain in the neck to wait for a customer service rep (they are a internet company, you should be able to do everything on the internet). I am going to try Lingo for a second line. I like the idea of having local numbers overseas.
The ordering process was a nightmare. After not being able to install the service I called
them to complain and they disconnected the service without telling me. Basically the customer service is nonexistent and after my 12-month period is over I will be switching to another voip service. If you want a company with nasty indifferent hard to reach customer support and so-so quality then packet 8 is for you.
I signed up for Packet8 online...they alone offered my local rate center. They lied...no
local number. And they lied when I called to find out what's up. And then they charged me $40 for a $10/month introductory month, forgiving the $70 disconnect fee as a concession! Gee, that was the first I heard about a disconnection charge. BS! Call quality was no better than the average cell phone. People I talked to reported an echo. You have to wait until the other person stops before you start. It was a big step down from my landline. I switched to Teliax...much better company to deal with so far, better call quality and a local number.
Packet 8 customer service is hard to aquire. Overall sound quality is good, and service is general is good. P8 has a lot of calling features I like, but wish they had fax capability. Don't do any international calling so I can not comment as to billing issues?
To all those people who cannot make up their mind about Packet8, or some other VOIP Provider, let me clear your mind. Packet8 is the way to go! Vonage and others have no customer service. Now you might think so what, but do yourself a favor, and sign up with a company that cares what its customers think. They have a great deal and service running. Happy Calling!
I have had p8 for over 2 years and liked it more for the savings but talk about crooks they
raised my bill to 24.99 and never said anything- no emails or anything over $4 so i am now trying out other services also p8 quality is from 1 to 10-- I give it 5+ i give vonage a 7 because i dont hear echos ever i do with p8 at least 1 out of 6 calls sometimes i have to call back to fix it.. I am trying a new service today and will post it
Cool features are "Simultaneous Ring" (cell phone will ring at same time as home phone(s)) and emails with attached voice mail messages...no longer need to call home and retrieve messages. Reduced my phone bill from $70/mo to the $19.99/mo plan.
I've had the Packet8 service since September of 2005. I did not select them because of their available features. That was definately one of Packet8's downfalls. But, having great features meant nothing to me if the service wasn't reliable and of good quality. After debating the pro's and con's of the different providers, I chose Packet8. I do not regret them in the least.
The service has been 100% stable since I've had it. No outages whatsoever. I have tweaked my broadband connection with QOS and the g.711 codec and the call quality with Packet8 is great. So good that I had no second thoughts of eliminating my traditional land line phone service. For 3 weeks of trial service, I purposely neglected to tell my wife and kids that I had gotten Packet8. I rewired all my house jacks to run Packet8 and forwarded the landline phone to the Packet8. At no time did my wife or kids even question the quality of the phone service, When I confessed that they had been using Packet8 for 3 weeks instead of Ma'Bell they had no problems switching permanantly. Especially to save $40 a month.
As I mentioned, Packet8's features were the basic features that most people would use. Call waiting, call forwarding, etc.... They really didn't have some of the features the other providers offered. That changed Feb 1, 2006. Packet8 now has just about all the features that everyone else has and some that others don't. Including a failover in case my Broadband internet goes down or the phone adapter dies, it will automatically forward calls to any number I choose. In
my case, my cell phone. The only feature they don't provide currently is Name on the caller ID. I am so use to cell phones that only show the telephone number, that a name is not that important to me. I usually know by looking at the number who it is. Anyway, now with all the added features, Packet8 is definately a keeper. Their customer service is great if you call them directly. Emailing takes way too long. So, there's my review. Take it with a grain of salt. No one provider can be all things to all people, but Packet8 sure tries. They are slow at adding changes, but when they do things they normally do it right. Their company has been around since 1987 which is a very long time in the computer type world.
Had service for 2 years or so. Initially call quality was terrible with difficulty connecting. I planned to change providers but then they had an upgrade and service got much better. Instead of cheap phone with advanced features I began using an old heavy AT&T phone with it and the calls went better so I'll be sticking with company. I suggest to try changing you phone to a higher quality one to improve service. Problems may reflect that at times.
