AT&T embraces let's-sue-Vonage fad
Yet another big-name telco has sued Vonage for patent infringement.
This time, it's AT&T putting the screws to the plucky voice over IP provider. The erstwhile Ma Bell filed suit last week in a Wisconsin-based federal court, insisting that Vonage is violating its patent for a 'wide-area packet telephony system.'...

VoIP on Windows is like POTS on crack
Relying on a soft client running on Windows as my sole resource for making important calls has been a recipe for disaster. Plain old telephone service may be old fashioned, but you know what? With POTS, 99% of the time the phone just works. The same can't be said for my current voice over IP setup, which I am relying on in my new office. ...

Amended Internet Tax Ban Will Not Include VoIP
Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee approved an amendment to the Internet Tax Freedom Act of 1998 which would prevent the tax ban from expiring. However, the amendment also eliminates tax protection for VoIP services. 'The amendment, offered by committee Chairman John Conyers Jr., a Michigan Democrat, would extend the ban on Internet access taxes until Nov. 1, 2011. ... The Conyers amendment would allow nine states with Internet access taxes to continue them. It would also narrow the definition of Internet access, excluding services such as VoIP from the tax ban.'...

The Third Stage of the VoIP Rocket Never Fired
Ten years ago was the dawn of Voice over IP (VoIP). The pioneering Israeli company VocalTec had just released its VoIP software for PCs (it was named iPhone, BTW). Industry guru Jeff Pulver (whom I now partner with in FWD) had begun to hold his Voice on the Net (VON) shows. As the founder of VoIP startup ITXC, I was invited to give a keynote at VON in Boston. ...

House bill would give VoIP companies direct access to 911 system
Anyone making a 911 call in the U.S. today using a voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone isn't directly calling the local 911 center. Instead, the call has to go through a third party, such as a competitive local exchange carrier, who then connects that emergency call to the local 911 operator.
The reason for a middleman is simple -- current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules only allow traditional telephone service carriers to connect directly with the 911 system backbone to avoid swamping the service during emergencies. That leaves VoIP phone companies without a direct way to provide 911 service on their own. ...

Vonage is putting on a brave face about the future now that one of its two patent litigation problems is in the rear-view mirror. So far, it's hanging tough. ...

Skype Shuffle: Is It a Stumble (Upon) or a New Paradigm for eBay?
This week's news about eBay and Skype seemed pretty bad at first. Ebay is taking a $1.4 billion charge against its Q3 earnings to pay off Skype's shareholders early as part of its original deal to buy the VoIP upstart. Meanwhile, the remaining founder of Skype is stepping down as CEO. Most press coverage summed the news up as a sign that eBay paid far too much for Skype in the first place and is only now accepting that reality. Very little thought or attention was paid to the underlying questions of what eBay is going to do with Skype....
