Net2Phone Canada (formerly Versature) Review by WhichVoIP

Net2Phone Canada was born from the acquisition of Versature in 2018 by Net2Phone, a subsidiary of IDT Corporation. Even though the acquisition was in 2018 it wasn't until 2021 where rebranding the Versature name to its new name of Net2Phone Canada was completed.

Net2Phone Canada came into existence after Versature founder Paul Emond came across communication challenges with existing phone systems and the costs associated with making long distance phone calls. This surmounting issue is what drove them into the VoIP market and ultimately inspired development of "a better phone solution". In 2005, this idea evolved into a full-fledged hosted VoIP phone service that now serves over 950 Canadian cities and a growth rate of 55% year over year.

The Good

Net2Phone Canada offers three (3) value-packed plans starting at $29.99 per user per month for businesses with 6 or more users (and with a 12 month term). Each plan, called the Essentials (from $29.99/mo), Professional (from $34.99/mo), and Enterprise (from $44.99/mo) plans, offers different amounts of long distance calling, toll-free usage, conference bridge usage, and call queues/ring groups. The Essentials plan includes unlimited local calling, whereas the other two plans include unlimited Canada and USA calling. Net2Phone Canada also includes complimentary Polycom VVX 300 phone rentals with these plans and there are various hardware upgrade opportunities available, eliminating much of the overhead costs associated with switching service providers.

A specially priced package for small businesses is available which they call their Small Business Starter Kit. This serves as an all-in-one bundle for businesses with up to 5 users for a total of $130/month. This plan does not include the complimentary phone rental but does boast competitive long distance rates and includes business phone features like an Auto Attendant and call queues.

All Net2Phone Canada plans include features such as voicemail, voicemail-to-email, voicemail transcription, call forwarding, Net2Phone Canada Smart Answer, find me - follow me, three-way call conferencing, Auto Attendant, ring groups, and call queues. Net2Phone Canada also provides each user with access to their suite of leading cloud integrations, including a Salesforce integration which allows users to quickly and easily log call details, a Slack integration for live call monitoring and collaboration, a Klipfolio integration for data mashup and visualizations, a Google Chrome integration for advanced Social Caller ID screenpops and click-to-dial functionality, as well as an open API for custom integrations of any type. Call recording is also available for an added fee of $10 per month.

An online portal, called Sonar, is available to users for configuring features and more. Different permission roles are available for different levels of access (so you can control what employees can access), including an Office Manager view, and End User view, a Call Center Supervisor view, and a Call Center Agent view. Live call data and analytics are also available to Office Managers and Call Center Supervisor roles.

Net2Phone Canada has a Service Level Agreement (SLA) in place, promising to credit customers on a per user basis should the service ever experience a shut down of 30 minutes or more. This is always nice to see, as it highlights the company has confidence in the reliability of its service. Their TRUST initiative also provides live and historical system status updates for all to see.

On the support side, initially it looks like the FAQs are more sales related than support. However, it turns out Net2Phone Canada has a 611 feature for customers. Simply calling 611 from your phone will get you through to their Canadian based bilingual support department. Each new client is provided a dedicated point of contact to guide them through the setup and implementation process, including phone number ports, Auto Attendant configuration, and training of the platform to make onboarding a smoother experience.

The Bad

Net2Phone Canada is not the cheapest solution out there, but they do offer value for money and honor the old saying "you get what you pay for". If your business works with companies outside of your location and Canada, it may make more sense to purchase the Professional plan as this is the best value for regular calling to the continental United States.

The lowest prices advertised require a 12 month term. The assumption here is that a month to month contract may cost you a few extra dollars per month. We always recommend getting a custom quote and talking to the provider to get exact pricing for your exact needs.

Some of the additional fees for feature add-ons are a little pricey compared to market standards. For example, Fax-Over-IP costs $29 monthly. Local number ports are currently $60 per number.

The Bottom Line

  • The Small Business Starter Kit plan is available for the small business that needs 5 phones or less and costs $130 per month. Unimited local calling is included.
  • The Essentials plan starts at $29.99 per month, per extension for 6 or more phones. This plan includes unlimited local calling plus 2,500 Toll Free minutes.
  • The Professional plan is a step up, starting at $34.99 per month per user. This plan includes unlimited calling in Canada and the US. They also include 5,000 Toll Free minutes and a conference bridge. Again this is for 6 users or more.
  • The Enterprise plan starts from $44.99 and includes unlimited calling in Canada/US, a conference bridge plus 1,000 minutes, and 10,000 Toll Free calling minutes.
  • Various integrations are available, including Salesforce, Klipfolio, Slack, and click to dial with Chrome and Office 365.
  • Customer support is Canadian based and fully bilingual. A user and admin portal called Sonar is available to customers.
  • Various add-on features are available at an additional small monthly cost, such as smartphone/desktop calling Apps, fax to email, fax-over-IP and additional phone numbers.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, Net2Phone Canada appears to be a company that focuses on customer satisfaction and trust. The service is focused more on businesess that need 6 or more phones, from SMB's to Enterprises, and located across Canada. If your business falls into those categories then Net2Phone Canada are definately worth your consideration. Pricing is a little on the higher end of the spectrum but the service includes a solid feature set as standard plus some specific integration features that many providers do not offer, resulting in a value for money product and service.
