VoIP over 3G

3G VoIP applications for Apple now lets users override their phone carrier’s rate plans to receive unlimited calling minutes.

Now VoIP is available on Apple products over 3G and 4G  networks. This revolutionary step in VoIP technology makes it possible for people who are on limited telephone data plans switch over to voice over IP when they find themselves low on minutes. This allows them to enjoy low cost international or free calling within the United States via the VoIP connection. This is groundbreaking news that has disappointed competitors who view the move as a threat of all consumers eventually paying less money to use their cell phones. However, there is no recourse for them to take, because the FCC has put strict regulations into place that forbids carriers to punish mobile subscribers for taking advantage of the new VoIP 3G technology.

While there are plans afoot to make VoIP 3G technology available on all Smart Phones, at this time, it is currently only available on the Apple iPhone and iPad. At this time, the only hardware necessary to take advantage of voice deployment over IP on a 3G network are a headphone, a mic, the Apple iPad WiFi, a wireless earbud or blue tooth headset. Given the official Apple carrier’s sometimes steep rate plans, VoIP can save users a lot of money.

VoIP over 3G lets users make call from any location that has a good 3G signal. It potentially allows the iPhone or iPad users to save all of their monthly-allotted minutes. This means they can choose much less expensive monthly plans and not have to worry about being charged extra for using their phones over their minute plan allowances.

At this point in time, there is a limited number of VoIP providers available. A further disadvantage is that most of the free options have call time restrictions and annoying voice ads. However, there are a number of providers who have plans in the works to design new and exciting VoIP over 3G apps that can be downloaded and utilized on the iPad.

There is no doubt about the fact that using the Internet via VoIP is the best option available for low-cost international calls and free calling within the United States. Improved VoIP technology assures much better reception and overall voice quality of the calls as well, making the connections crisper and clearer. There is still the occasional dropped call, but this happens with even the best of the conventional cell phone carriers.

What was viewed as a limitation of VoIP over 3G was that users could only make VoIP calls over WiFi and not over the phone’s actual data connection. However, that problem has been solved with the introduction of a new app for iPhone that now allows callers to make VoIP calls over their data connections without being charged for them. In the unlikely case that the quality of the call is poor, the user can switch back to his or her regular cell phone carrier.
