Implementing a Business VoIP Solution

Businesses looking to gain a cost advantage, as well as additional communications features, are turning to business VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solutions. This technology is not limited to businesses of any particular size; larger enterprise businesses routinely roll out major, multi-site business VoIP implementations and smaller businesses use it as well, to take advantage of the enormous cost savings and access to high-end features that would not otherwise be available. Even small office/home office (SOHO) environments can use this technology to great advantage.

Setting up a business VoIP environment for multiple users, or even for multiple offices, is no more complicated than putting in a standard PBX, and depending on the implementation, it may even be easier. Before going any further, the business must first decide whether to use a hosted or in-house PBX environment. In a hosted environment, which is very well-suited for smaller businesses, all of the hardware is managed and hosted by a third-party provider, and there is very little integration work involved for this type of business VoIP solution. There are also several providers of business VoIP service, many of which are mainstream, well-known telecommunications companies and cable companies.

VoIP solution Logistics

For very small business VoIP installations of just a few phones, the implementation will be very easy to roll out without assistance, and all it requires is a broadband connection, an IP phone, a router, broadband modem, and some Ethernet cable. Instead of plugging your Internet phone into the phone company wall jack, you plug it into your router, which is in turn connected to the broadband modem. It is not necessary for the computer to be on to use the Internet phone. For smaller business VoIP implementations, you can add multiple extensions simply by running a separate cable for each phone directly into the router. Even the smallest routers usually have four or five ports, which would allow for an average SOHO installation of perhaps three phones. For installations of more than four or five phones however, an IP PBX may be required. If you have an existing PBX, you will have to replace it with an IP PBX, which fortunately is not an expensive investment.

The specialized IP phones will prove to be a good investment for businesses considering business VoIP services, in that they will afford plenty of added features and easy integration with the computer and desktop business applications. But, an ordinary telephone can be used as well, if it is connected through an analog telephone adapter (ATA).

One consideration in business VoIP implementations that is new to telephony is security. Because this is an Internet device, it is possible for hackers to infiltrate the system, and so it is highly desirable to place the business VoIP system behind a firewall.
