Growth of VoIP

The use of copper wire to transmit telephone calls has persisted from the time of Thomas Edison, to relatively recent times. However, just over the past two decades, telephony has made great strides, most notably with the incidence of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP technology is without a doubt the most groundbreaking technology since the invention of the telephone itself. First made popular in primitive peer-to-peer systems that worked on a PC-to-PC basis, VoIP has become a disruptive technology that has come to be a viable alternative to circuit-switched telephony.

Projected Growth of VoIP

Projections for VoIP growth are optimistic, with innovative startup VoIP carriers and resellers carving out large pieces of the market for themselves. This has not been lost on the major incumbent telecom carriers however, and they too, have been rolling out their own VoIP services.

The rapid growth has been an obvious result of the enormous cost advantages, and significant added features that are available through VoIP services. Traditional circuit-switched telephony simply cannot measure up to the convenience. Small businesspersons for example, can literally take their phone numbers with them while on the road, and make and receive calls from the same number.

The incredible growth is noted however in locations where broadband has become pervasive, and in much of the developing world, lower speed connections are still the rule. The United States and Western Europe has significant broadband penetration however, and so these are the areas where commercial VoIP has gained traction. VoIP is also moving rapidly into Central and South America, especially in Brazil. We will see VoIP penetration throughout much of Asia as well, first in the hyper-developed Asian markets like Japan and South Korea; but later in many regions of China and throughout the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) regions, where broadband initiatives are already starting to take hold.

Growth of Business VoIP

A major factor in the growth of VoIP in developed countries has been the acceptance of VoIP by the business community, and the availability of business-class services and on-premises equipment, such as IP PBX devices that specifically cater to large-scale VoIP installations. In the future, we can look forward to the second evolution of VoIP, which will be its use through mobile broadband (such as WiMAX). The increasing usage of sophisticated mobile devices such as smartphones, UMPCs and netbooks will create an environment where consumer and business demand will require providers to build out VoIP-enabled mobile devices, which may well give cellular a run for its money, just as it did to traditional circuit-switched telephony.
