VirtualPBX Review by WhichVoIP

Based in San Jose, California, VirtualPBX is a hosted VoIP service provider that offers rich featured virtual phone systems. Originally founded in San Francisco in 1997, the company first focused on creating a system for Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) that is now a flagship component of its service. Today, this company is a highly respected VoIP provider in this industry.

The Good

There are many good aspects to VirtualPBX. For starters, with any of its Service Level Agreements (SLA) you have a guaranteed uptime of 99.999%. Though many providers claim to offer this level of service, you will be hard pressed to find one that has not had these claims disputed, whereas negative feedback for this company is very minimal. They even go so far as to professionally address the few issues found on the review site Yelp!

Pertaining to core services, you will find two different classifications of calling plans. The Anywhere Plans are geared toward small businesses - all have a free trial period and start as low as $9.99 per month. For this, you receive a free phone, 300 minutes, unlimited extensions, 100 conference minutes and 10 pages of outbound faxing. This class of plans go as high as $24.99 per month and includes 4 free phones, 2000 minutes, 500 conference minutes and 100 outbound faxes.

The Office Plans offer much more for their different pricing tiers. Depending on the plan selected, rates will range from $19.99 per month up to $33.99. Essentially, the more lines selected, the lower rate charged per line each month. All plans include unlimited minutes and a certain number of free IP phones - for example, the $19.99 plan is aimed at 100 plus phone lines and includes as many phones as needed!

Under either plan, 43 features are included for every pricing category at no extra charge, with the exception of call recording which is somewhat limited. Additional business numbers can be added for $5 per line. Its flagship feature known as TrueACD can be added for $9.99 per month and adds a higher level of intelligent routing for call queues. Adding unlimited restrictions to features like outbound faxing, call recording and conferencing will cost $17.99, $19.99 and $34.99, respectively, per month.

The Bad

Truly, the bad aspects of VirtualPBX are very small. The only complaints that can be found against the company are related to pricing found in the fine print. Some customers allege that billing is inconsistent because sales representatives have failed to indicate how pricing may change.

For example, the prices indicated above are honored when paid at a yearly rate or with a 2 year commitment. Otherwise, most plans average an additional $10 per month for every line. This means it is advised to take advantage of the free trial period and free network assessment so there is no question as to whether or not VirtualPBX will meet the needs of your business. Then sign up for the longer commitment period once satisfied with the service.

The Bottom Line

  • Anywhere Startup: $9.99/mo for 300 minutes, 2 main numbers, 100 conference minutes, 1 phone.
  • Anywhere Pro: $19.99/mo for 1000 minutes, 2 main numbers, 200 conference minutes, 2 phones.
  • Anywhere Premium: $24.99/mo for 2000 minutes, 2 main numbers, 500 conference minutes, 4 phones.
  • Office Plans: $19.99/mo to $33.99/mo based on number of lines. Unlimited minutes.
  • Very few negative reviews against the company - they hold an A+ rating with the BBB.
  • Plan prices will increase an additional $10 a month per line without a commitment.
  • Over 43 features included for free with minimal restrictions.
  • Free mobile application can be used with any extension over 3G/4G or WiFi.

Overall Thoughts

VirtualPBX is a paradigm within the universe of hosted VoIP services. The services offered are what you should expect from any premium business phone system. It is really no wonder that they have received the Excellence Award from Internet Telephony magazine on a couple of occasions and earned the 2012 Product of the Year Award among recognitions from other reviewers.

The only issue some have with the company is relatively petty. Like with many other products and services, there is some fine print within terms and conditions. Any good business person should know to carefully look over contracts and ask questions to clarify when needed.

Hosted VoIP is an ideal cloud service with very few setbacks. The system offered by VirtualPBX is easy to manage and competitively priced against other well respected providers. If your business has a need for high volume calling and multiple extensions, this company should be in the mix for consideration.
