Default home DSL v business DSL?

    Hi,

I have DSL at home and I get about 3Mbps however I also have it for my business but only get about 1.5Mbps. Is this because I am further away from the exchange? I pay more for the busines DSL.

    Thanks

The best thing is to contact your provider and ask why - I assume it's the same provider you use for home and business.

You are correct that distance from the exchange will have an effect but it's probably the fact you have ADSL for your home use and SDSL for your business. ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Line Subscriber and SDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital LIne Subscriber.

Assuming you get 3Mbps, then with ADSL approximately 70% of this bandwidth is used in the download direction i.e transferring data from the internet. The other 30% is used in the other direction i.e uploading data. Most home users download a lot more info from the web than they upload.

However with a business DSL line they assume equal upload and download bandwidths are required. Thus for businesses you typically get SDSL.
