    Default VoIP Installation Configuration

I recently installed Sunrocket Voip at my home. I installed it to begin with the way the instructions said to which was: DSL Modem to ATA to Router to Computer. When I did this, I had Voip service but couldn't access the net on my computer. However, when I configure it this way: DSL Modem to Router then one port of the router to my ATA and another port to my Computer, everything works fine. My question is: Are there any known drawbacks or unforseen problems I might have down the road with this set up? I have not noticed any loss of call quality, etc. with this so far. Should I really try to get it to work the other way? Thank you for your help.

The main reason all providers prefer the router to be after the ATA is for Quality of Service (QoS).

Under really heavy traffic (i.e. data traffic from router side) the ATA can prioritize the voice over the data to guarantee a QoS. It will cut down the bandwidth of the data traffic to ensure the voice always gets the bandwidth it needs to guarantee good call quality.

If you have the router first and it seems to work it will probably be okay. Just monitor the call quality under really heavy data traffic.

If you have a high bandwidth uplink and downlink and you mainly just request webpages for uplink you'll likely never see an issue with the way you have connected it.

By the way, did you try connecting DSL modem to ATA to PC direct (i.e. no router)?

If I remember correctly, I did try the configuration: modem to ata to computer and I did have internet access, but anytime I went from the ata first then the router then out to the computer I lost internet connection.

I am the only person who uses my computer and rarely talk on the voip and use the computer at the same time anyway so I guess it shouldn't' be a big deal for me to have the ata fed by one of the ports on my router and everything seems to work with that set up so hopefully it will continue to.
