    Default Adapter / Set-up recommendation

I've decided to make the leap to Voip. I am looking for opinions on what i should buy to adapt my system. I currently have a wired PC and Linksys Wireless Router for my laptop. I would prefer not to buy a different router. I am overwhelmed with the choices for adapters--i have been considering buying an unlocked device--Linksys or Sipura are my top choices at this time. I am considering Allo.com and i know i could purchase their ATA but if i don't like their service i am nervous about owning a proprietery ( i am assuming) device. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks.

Allo.com have just announced a special with 2 years of service and a free ATA for $199 - now that the advertising is out of the way :-).

Most providers will give you an ATA(Analog Telephone Adapter) for free, you do not need a new router. Most ATA's are locked by the provider, however as most providers give them away it's not typically a problem. Many providers like Sunrocket do not allow you to Bring Your Own Device so you are locked into using their ATA other providers such as Allo do allow you to bring your own ATA.

The bottom line is, if you are a little wary of VoIP, pick a service that allows you do a month by month contract such as Viatalk (they also have a good special), if you like the service then change over to a longer term and cheaper plan. Let the provider pay for your equipment don't buy it yourself unless there are particular features you need.

    Hope this helps.

I went with Allo.com and it has been a nightmare. My experience with them has been awful, i've had the ATA for over a month and never got it working. I cancelled yesterday and am waiting for my RMA .

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out. Are you thinking of trying another provider or has this soured you for good? There are a lot of good companies out there, our reviews will give you a good insight. When you do find a provider you are happy with the cost savings really are nice.

To tell the truth, i am a little gun shy. I am thinking about getting my own unlocked device so i that i can have more options if i get stuck with a horrible ITSP. Now it's just a matter of picking which ATA to purchase. I'm overwhelmed.
